The defending World Champion Vishwanathan Anand defeated challenger Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in the fourth game of the 12 -game- World Chess Championship on Wednesday held in Sophia, Bulgaria. By this win, Anand is leading in the tournament by scoring 2.5 points against Topalov’s 1.5.
Anand who was playing with white pieces made the same move as Vladimir Kramnik of Russia when Kramnik played against Topalov in 2006. The move surprised Topalov who was not able to answer the threat. The match saw Topalov winning a pawn at the start of match kept it with himself for a long duration but when Anand opened the king side, his move backfired. With this defeat Topalov has lost two games playing with black.
Anand showed his genius when he played the Catalan in the 10th move and clinched Bulgarian’s move to the queen side. Anand used some very high quality moves to put his opponent under pressure and went for a sacrificial move of the knight against the king seizing a memorable victory.
Anand had lost the first game but won the second in remarkable fashion. The third match was without any result and was declared a draw. The duo will now meet on Friday for the fifth game after a rest day on Thursday. The game will see Topalov opening the match with white pieces.
