The World Chess Championship 2013 finally got its first definitive result, with Magnus Carlsen defeating Viswanathan Anand in Game 5 to take a 3-2 lead in the series.
Playing with white, Carlsen had a typically slow opening, allowing Anand to grab the initiative. But the Norwegian turned up the heat around midway through the game, exerting immense pressure on Anand with his quick, unpredictable moves. The Indian didn’t help his own cause by making a couple of tactical blunders, most notably the ones on move 13 and 45.
After more than four hours of intense play, the game exploded into a rook endgame, but Carlsen always had the upper hand as he had a two-pawn advantage over Anand. Ultimately, with the end in sight, Anand had no option but to offer resignation, allowing Carlsen to draw first blood in the championship.
The two will come back tomorrow to contest the sixth game.
