2:0 in the first half and 2:0 in the second,a perfect end to what was an one-sided affair. Joachim Low’s young team proved themselves too hot to handle for the Aussies. This is Germany’s youngest World Cup squad for 76 years and they played with a sense of freedom and flair that is not always associated with their country. Earlier Phillip Lahm became the youngest German to lead his national side in a World Cup.The clearly over aged Aussies were no match for the young and supremely efficient Germans who delivered like a well oiled machine. To make matters worse 10 minutes into the second half, Tim Cahill lunged in to try to take the ball from Bastian Schweinsteiger. The tackle was misdirected and poorly timed and the Mexican referee, Marco Rodríguez, brandished a red card.
Mesut Ozil set it up, Müller was alert and first to the ball and though. His pass went behind Klose it fell invitingly for Podolski to demonstrate the power of his left foot, his shot having too much pace for Mark Schwarzer to keep out, though the Australia goalkeeper got his right glove to the ball and Germany were 1:0 up.
Klose made sure that his love with the headers continue with every World cup he plays.
Müller made it 3-0 with a low right-foot drive that went in off the post and Cacau who had been on the pitch only a few minutes made it 4:0 when he turned in Ozil’s low cross from the left.
Did Germany miss Michael Ballack? Well, this is too early to say…
