Qualifying criteriaAccording the Regulations of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, the ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.
Permutation and Combinations
Uruguay
Uruguay are currently the favorites along with Mexico to go through and as they play against each other a win or even a draw is enough to send them to the next round on 5 points.
If Uruguay lose to Mexico and either of France and South Africa get a win, it will come down to goal difference.
Mexico
Similar situation to that of Uruguay where a draw or win will send them to the next round .
A loss will bring things down to goal difference where the winner between South Africa and France will have to match the goal difference of Mexico which is currently +2 , meaning a 3 to 5 goal victory for France or South Africa.
France
They need to beat South Africa by a huge margin and hope that Mexico and Uruguay don’t draw, maybe by 5 goals.
South Africa
They are the least likely to qualify as they will be up against a -3 goal difference and Les Blues, they should defeat France by a huge margin and then hope for the best.
Prediction
Uruguay and Mexico are the clear favorites in this group and they will settle for a draw. Even a loss to either team would still won’t be that bad provided that the other match doesn’t bring a huge win.
