In the pre-quarters, Dutt tried in vain, but the Russian Besik Kudokhov was far too experienced for him. Luckily for the Indian, Besik made it to the finals which handed him a reprieve and a chance to claim bronze via the repechage.
Gomez Matos Francis from Puerto Rico was his opponent in the repechage. Dutt would have to win 3 matches, including this one, to get his hands on the bronze medal.
Round 1
The first round started on form, as before. Cautious play by both wrestlers, with neither doing anything extraordinary. Not wanting to concede an early advantage, both men played it safe and it made for a cagey affair.
The round went into the clinch, and this time Dutt was lucky with the coin toss. Having received the advantage, Yogeshwar ensured that he made the most of it and soon threw his opponent out of the ring. 1-0 to the Indian and Dutt was in the driving seat.
Round 2
With the Puerto Rican having some ground to make up, he came out much more aggressive of the two. But Dutt stood his ground and repelled all attacks. It was a stalemate, as Gomez’s attacks were unable to break through the Indian’s defense. The round ended 0-0, and once again it was clinch time.
Lady Luck was on the Indian’s side as he won the toss and the advantage in the clinch. And it took him only 5 seconds to throw Gomez out of the ring, and with it, ensure victory.
So there we have it, Yogeshwar Dutt makes the most of his second chance and moves into the next round. He will now have to win 2 more matches to take home that elusive bronze medal.
Well done, Yogeshwar ! That was a sensational performance ! Now do it twice more, and bring home a medal.
