Zidane backs Mourinho to be a success at Chelsea

2011 World Football Challenge Press Conference

Former Real Madrid star Zinedine Zidane is confident that Jose Mourinho will do a good job at Chelsea. Mourinho, in 2010, had recommended Zidane to join Real Madrid in an ambassadorial role. Zidane is currently working as the Sporting Director at Real.

“Jose still has confidence and I am sure he will do well,” said Zidane.

“Of course he has a special relationship with Chelsea and maybe he will feel more at home there than he did in Madrid. He has proved he is a coach full of quality – and I expect him to be very successful with Chelsea again.”

Zidane retired from professional football after 2006 World Cup, helping France to reach the finals which they lost to Italy on penalties.

He added: “You can coach any big club in Europe but until you have coached at Real Madrid you do not know the meaning of expectation.

“You are expected to win a major trophy every season. If you do not win at least one of La Liga or the Champions League every year, then the season cannot be considered a success.”
