HS Prannoy will begin his campaign at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, July 29, and the shuttler doesn't have a lot to worry about as of now. He is up against Germany's Fabian Roth for his first match, and is expected to cruise past the World No.82 with ease.
Prannoy goes into his debut Games as the 13th seed, and has been given an easy lot in his group stage matches. Placed in Group K, the Indian will have eto battle only Roth and Vietnamese World No.70 Le Duc Phat to make it through to the elimination rounds.
For now, the World Championships and Asian Games bronze medalist will enter the court of La Chapelle Arena on Sunday at (or after) 8 PM in a bid for his first win in Paris. While he has never faced Roth on the BWF circuit before, statistics remain in favor of the Indian.
Prannoy enters the marquee event as one half of India's two-man team in the men's singles event at the Games. With his compatriot Lakshya Sen handed a difficult group stage draw, medal expectations lay squarely on the 32-year-old's shoulders to bring back India's maiden medal in the event.
While HS Prannoy may not be a favorite for gold, he is certainly in contention to make a podium finish on his debut itself. While his way to a medal is marred by the likes Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie and Japan's Kodai Naraoka, a strong run could very well ses the Indian in the top three.
