HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen will engage in a battle of the ages at the Paris Olympics in the round of 16 to decide who advances to the quarterfinals. The two Indians are slated to face each other at (or after) 5:40 PM on Thursday, August 1.
Going into this match, Sen is the one who has had to fight harder for his spot on the courts of La Chapelle Arena, having worked his way through a tricky group. In his opening round match, he squared off against Kevin Cordon, defeating the Tokyo Olympics semi-finalist in straight games.
Next, he battled Belgian Julien Carraggi, whom he beat 21-19, 21-14 for the first time in the duo's three clashes. Lastly, Lakshya Sen took on reigning All England champion Jonatan Christie, yet another match he won without dropping a single game.
On the other hand, HS Prannoy was placed in an easy group, with both opponents ranked well below him. Ranked at World No. 13, Prannoy was expected to sail through to the round of 16 with ease, and that's exactly what he did.
For his first match, he steamrolled over World No. 82 Fabian Roth of Germany on Sunday 21-18, 21-12. He then clashed with Vietnam’s Le Duc Phat (World No. 70), surviving a scare and coming from a game down to win 16-21, 21-11, 21-12. Now, the two Indians will suit up for a fight sure to delight as they look for a place in the final eight.
