Men's singles player Lakshya Sen will begin India's badminton campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 22-year-old will step out onto the courts of La Chapelle Arena on Saturday, July 27, to take on Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon in his opening match.

At the Games, Sen has been placed alongside Cordon, Julien Carraggi, and Jonatan Christie in Group L. While Indonesia’s Christie is the most obvious threat, neither Cordon nor Carragi are to be underestimated.

As of now, Sen and his Guatemalan opponent have faced each other only once, where the Indian claimed a resounding victory. Back at the 2021 World Championships, the two battled each other in the quarterfinals, where Lakshya, the eventual bronze-medalist, beat Cordon 21-13, 21-8 in just 31 minutes.

However, that doesn't mean the 37-year-old Guatemalan can be counted out of the competition just yet. While this appearance at the Paris Olympics marks Lakshya Sen’s debut at the marquee event, for Cordon, it is his fifth time embracing the big stage.

Over the years, the Guatemalan has managed to stage multiple upsets at the Games. In 2012, he'd beaten 15th seed Rajiv Ouseph in the group stage to make it to the elimination rounds.

At Tokyo 2020, Cordon won both his group stage matches, beating 8th seed Ng Ka Long Angus in the process, and made it all the way to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Viktor Axelson.

Paris Olympics 2024: Lakshya Sen to take on Julien Carraggi in his second group stage match

After Lakshya Sen completes his first match at the Paris Olympics 2024, he will get a day of rest before returning to action. For his second group stage match, the Indian shuttler will square off against Germany's Julien Carraggi.

The match is scheduled to take place late on Monday, July 29, giving Sen plenty of time to recover from his battle against Cordon.

The match against the German will be Lakshya Sen's last chance to get used to the courts of La Chapelle Arena before he takes on Jonathan Christie in a bid to make it to the knockout stages.
