PV Sindhu and He Bingjiao are all set to face each other in the round of 16 at the Paris Olympics, and the match promises to be a thriller. Both shuttlers are yet to drop a game at the event, and their face-off on Thursday will lead to one of them walking out of Paris empty-handed.
So far in their career, the Indian and the Chinese have battled against each other a whopping 20 times, with the latter having emerged victorious in 11 of those instances. The duo's rivalry dates back nearly a decade and has delivered some unforgettable marathon matches over the years.
The first time the two clashed swords was at the 2015 Indonesia Masters, where an unseeded He Bingjiao took down first-seed Sindhu in straight games. The Chinese repeated this performance a year later at the Swiss Open, but Sindhu got her revenge a month later at the Malaysia Open.
From there, this pattern continued for a year, with the two shuttlers trading wins back and forth over their next six clashes. That story came to an end when Sindhu claimed two consecutive victories over He at the 2017 Korea Open and the 2017 BWF World Super Series finals. The Chinese retorted by claiming the wins in all four of the duo's next encounters.
Going into this match at the Paris Olympics, He Bingjiao is the winner of their most recent clash, having beaten PV Sindhu in straight games at the 2022 Asian Games. However, interestingly enough, despite trailing in the head-to-head records, the Indian has never lost to her Chinese counterpart at a major competition.
Who will PV Sindhu face next at the Paris Olympics?
If PV Sindhu does get the better of He Bingjiao on Thursday, she could be faced with yet another Chinese rival at the Paris Olympics. For her quarterfinal encounter, the World No.13 will likely run into reigning Olympic Champion Chen Yu Fei.
Chen has been a dominant force on the BWF circuit for a handful of years and will prove to be a difficult challenge for Sindhu to overcome.
