Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have had a winning start to their campaign at the Paris Olympics, and it has seen them make it to their first-ever quarterfinals at the marquee event. Now, the duo's next challenge at the Games will be the Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
Before this impending clash on the courts of La Chapelle Arena, the two men's doubles giants have faced each other eleven times on the BWF circuit. Chia and Yik have claimed wins in a majority of these matches, leading the head-to-head record 8-3. However, it has been Rankireddy and Shetty who have won the last three encounters, making for an interesting match tomorrow.
The first time the Indian and Malaysian pairs squared off against each other was in 2017, at the Toyota Open India International Challenge. Despite being the first seeds and having the home-court advantage, Rankireddy and Shetty were unable to pull through, losing to their rivals 11-21, 21-17, 10-21.
Chia and Yik would go on to repeat this performance for all of their next seven clashes. However, the Indians finally changed this narrative in 2023, beating the Malaysians 21-17, 21-18 in just under 43 minutes to clinch the Indonesia Open Super 1000 title.
Since then, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have battled Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik twice and claimed wins in straight games each time.
