Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will now gear up for their final group stage match at the Paris Olympics as they take on Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto on Tuesday, July 30. While the Indians remain a favorite to walk away with the win, their Indonesian foes will likely make them work for it.

Rankireddy and Shetty head into this match with one win, having beaten home favorites Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar in their opening round at the Games. The World No.3 duo was then scheduled to face Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel, but the Germans withdrew due to injury, leaving the Indians with an empty day.

The third seeds will get to business at the La Chapelle Arena for their last and toughest group-stage match. The winner of this encounter will be the one who moves forward to the quarterfinals.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have battled Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto five times before their impending clash in Paris, and have taken the win in three of those matches.

The first time the two pairs played each other was at the 2017 Indonesia Open, where the host nation's Alfian and Ardianto outfoxed the Indians 21-9, 21-19 in straight sets. A year and a half later, the four shuttlers met one more, this time at the Syed Modi International. Despite the home-court advantage, Rankireddy and Shetty were unable to pull through, losing 11-21, 20-22.

The first time the Indian duo beat the World No.7 was at the 2019 Thailand Open, where they took down Alfian and Ardianto 21-17, 21-13,

The two pairs' most recent battles took place in 2023, at the Indonesia Open and the Korea Open. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty bested the Indonesians both times but were pushed to the full distance at the latter event.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty's overall group stage results

So far at the Paris Olympics, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have looked in strong form since their very first match. The duo played Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar for that match, and eased past the French duo with ease. The scoreline at the end of the short encounter read 21-17, 21-14 in favour of the Indians.

Their next group stage match was scheduled for Monday, July 29, but with their opponents, Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel withdrawing due to injury, Rankireddy and Shetty were gifted a day of rest instead.

Now, they will battle Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto, and a win against the Indonesians will see them through to the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics.
