He Bingjiao is set to face off against PV Sindhu in the Round of 16 at the Paris Olympics, and she could be the one who dashes the Indian's dreams of a third consecutive medal finish. The Chinese shuttler is seeded sixth at the Games, and is a strong contender to end up on the podium.
He was introduced to the sport of badminton as a child, and was singled out as a promising player from the very beginning. On the junior circuit, she was a Youth Olympic champion, a two-time World Junior Championships gold medalist, as well as a four-time Asian Junior Championships gold medalist.
The Chinese made her debut on the senior international stage at the age of 16, winning the 2013 Vietnam Open Grand Prix. She continued to deliver several impressive performances over the course of the next few years, often taking down seasoned opponents including the likes of Tai Tzu Ying, PV Sindhu and Ratchanok Intanon.
2018 was one of He Bingjiao’s strongest seasons, yielding a bronze medal at the World Championships. A year later, she took silver at the Asian Championships behind Akane Yamaguchi and was the titlist at the Korea Open.
In 2020, the Chinese qualified for her debut Olympics as the eight seed. She had an impressive run of performances, but fell short of a podium finish after losing to PV Sindhu in the bronze-medal match.
In 2021, she earned another bronze medal from the BWF World Championships.
