The 2020 Tokyo Olympics was India’s boxing icon MC Mary Kom's second appearance. Unfortunately, she had a disappointing campaign as she bowed out of Tokyo 2020 after a loss in the women’s 51kg round of 16 match, which marked the end of her career at the Olympics.
Mary Kom, who won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics, showcased noteworthy performances in the three rounds. However, she struggled while fighting to Ingrit Valencia of Colombia resulting in a 3:2 split verdict at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.
Ingrit, a Rio 2016 bronze medalist, employed an aggressive approach from the start and put the Indian on the back foot, which eventually favored her at the end of Round 1.
The six-time world champion Mary revised her strategy in the second round and found success by doing that. The 41-year-old used her right jab-left cross combo and won the second round by a 3:2 split decision.
In the final round, both boxers took a lot of chances to land punches. The 41-year-old managed to evade Ingrit’s attack and put up some solid counterpunches.
However, Ingrit managed to win the vote from three judges and secure an impressive victory . Notably, the Colombian boxer raised Mary's hand at the end, offering respect to the Indian legend.
Mary Kom's stellar boxing career
In addition, Mary Kom is the only female boxer to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times. She is also the only female boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer (male or female) to clinch eight World Championship medals.
Nicknamed Magnificent Mary, she became the first Indian female boxer to win a gold medal in the Asian Games in 2014 and the first Indian female boxer to win gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
