Day 12 of the 2024 Paris Olympics brought enormous disappointment to Indian sports fans. When most Indians woke up on Wednesday, August 8, they would have expected a medal from Vinesh Phogat in the women's wrestling 50 kg category and a podium finish for Mirabai Chanu in women's 49 kg weightlifting.
Unfortunately, neither of the two could secure a medal. Vinesh, who was assured of a medal when Day 11 ended, was shockingly disqualified as she was 100 grams overweight on the morning of the final against Sarah Hildebrandt.
Despite appeals from the Indian contingent, the IOC did not change its stance on Vinesh Phogat. Instead, Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who lost to Vinesh in the semifinals, earned an entry into the gold medal match.
Later in the day, Mirabai Chanu narrowly missed out on a bronze medal as she finished fourth in the weightlifting competition. Chanu lifted 199 kg, while the bronze medal winner Surodchana Khambao lifted 200 kg. The difference of 1 kg hurt the Indian fans a lot.
Reacting to the results on Day 12, an Indian fan wrote:
"100 grams haunted us in the morning. 1 kg in the night. I will probably end this nightmare of a day by checking my own weight, just to get further disappointed."
Another Indian fan pointed out how India has finished fourth in so many events at this year's Olympics and tweeted:
"Manu Bhaker finished 4th. - Arjun Babuta finished 4th. - Dhiraj & Ankita finished 4th. - Anant Jeet & Maheshwari finished 4th. - Lakshya Sen finished 4th. - Mirabhai Chanu finished 4th. Paris Olympics are all about heartbreaks for India."
"A potential Gold Medal and a guaranteed Medal has been taken away from Vinesh Phogat. The most cruel thing happened to a sportsperson," another user chimed in.
Another Indian fan joked that the Indian sports fans' weight would have reduced by 1 kg just by knowing what transpired at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Day 12.
"1 kg toh Indian fans ka aaj ke results ke baad hi kam ho gaya hoga," he tweeted.
"At this point, it's very hard to watch Olympics live" - Indian fans heartbroken after series of defeats at Paris 2024 Olympics
Apart from Vinesh Phogat and Mirabai Chanu's disappointing outcomes at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Indian women's table tennis team also went down 1-3 in the quarterfinal against Germany.
Meanwhile, wrestler Antim Panghal shockingly lost by 0-10 in the Round of 16 match against unseeded Zeynep Yetgil.
Reacting to the series of defeats, an Indian fan posted on X:
"At this point, it's very hard to watch olympics live I am just gonna see only scores."
Day 13 of the 2024 Paris Olympics will begin shortly. Fans have high hopes for Neeraj Chopra, who will compete in the men's javelin throw final.
