Lakshya Sen and Lee Zii Jia both suffered heartbreaks in the semifinals of the Paris Olympics, but their journey at the Games isn't done just yet. The two shuttlers will now face off against each other in the bronze medal match at 6 PM IST on Tuesday, August 5 to decide who ends up on the podium with Viktor Axelsen and Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
Before his stumble against the reigning Olympic champion in the semifinals, Sen was impeccable at the Paris Olympics. He made it to the quarters without dropping a single game, taking down All England champion Jonatan Christie and World Championship bronze medalist HS Prannoy.
In the quarters he faced Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen, coming from a game down to beat the veteran 19-21, 21-15, 21-12. After this, came the fateful clash with Denmark's Viktor Axelsen. While Sen was impossibly good for most of the match, the Indian could never hold on long enough to win a game. He eventually went down 19-21, 21-14 despite having led both games.
Meanwhile, Lee Zii Jia has had an equally strong outing at the Paris Olympics. The Malaysian sailed through his group stage matches, before running into Tomorrow Popov, who beat Tokyo bronze-medalist Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.
However, the home favorite was unable to faze Lee, and he moved past the Frenchmen in straight games before disposing of Denmark's Anders Antonsen similarly. His luck finally ran out in his semifinal encounter against World Champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn, as he went down 14-21, 15-21.
Now, Lakshya Sen and Lii Zee Jia will battle each other on the courts of La Chapelle Arena to determine who takes home the bronze from the Paris Olympics.
