India's para-badminton medalists at Paris Paralympics 2024 will be rewarded with a total prize purse of INR 50 lakh, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) announced on Tuesday, September 24.
Indian para-shuttlers created history by winning five medals at the recently concluded Paris Paralympics 2024. Their best finish in badminton at the Paralympics over the years, saw the athletes return home with one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.
Nitesh Kumar won the gold medal in the Men's Singles SL3 event. Thulasimathi Murugesan and Suhas Yathiraj won a silver medal each in the Women's Singles SU5 and Men's Singles SL4 events, respectively.
Manisha Ramadass clinched the bronze medal in the Women's Singles SU5 event, while Nithya Sivan bagged a bronze medal for India in the Women's Singles SU6 event.
Gold medalist Nitesh will receive INR 15 lakh from the Badminton Association of India. The silver medalists Suhas and Thulasimathi will receive INR 10 lakh each, while Manisha and Nithya, the bronze medal winners, will be honored with a cash prize of INR 7.5 lakhs each.
Commenting on the historic campaign of India’s para-badminton players, Badminton Association of India (BAI) Secretary General Sanjay Mishra heaped praise on the Indian athletes. He was quoted as saying in a press release:
“Indian Para badminton players have been performing consistently on the world stage and the cash rewards are just one way for BAI to recognise their efforts in helping the country win medals at the Paralympics.”
“BAI is committed to developing and promoting para-badminton across the country and helping these players achieve much more success and many more initiatives to develop para-badminton are being undertaken,” he added.
