Atanu Das is an Indian archer who competes in the recurve men's individual and team events. Das, the spouse of former World No. 1 Indian archer Deepika Kumari, holds a world ranking of 81 as of July 29, 2024.
Das was one of the three archers who took part in the men’s individual event in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He earned a spot following his performance in the quarter-final stage of the men's team recurve at the 2019 World Archery Championships in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
He was also a member of team India, which was eliminated by South Korea in the quarter-finals. Despite this setback, Atanu Das showcased his prowess in the men's individual event, reaching the Round of 8 after defeating Oh Jin-hyuk of South Korea in the Round of 16.
Japan's Takaharu Furukawa knocked Atanu Das out of Tokyo 2022
India's aspiration to win a medal in archery at the Olympics faded when Atanu Das was knocked out of the tournament following a 4-6 defeat against Japan's Takaharu Furukawa in the quarter-finals.
The Indian got off to a dismal start while facing off Furukawa, the silver medalist from the London Olympics at the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field. Das scored 25 with his three arrows (9, 8, 8) in the first round, while the Japanese rival shot 27 (9, 9, 9).
Despite this, Atanu Das showcased resilience and bounced back in the following set with 28 (10, 9, 9). Meanwhile, Furukawa scored 28 with his three arrows (9, 9, 10) to match the points. Das, 32, managed to draw in the third set scoring 28 points (10, 10, 8), surpassing Furukawa's 27 (8, 10, 9).
Both archers delivered impressive performances in the fourth set with Das scoring 28 (9, 10, 9), while the Japanese archer matched him arrow for arrow, resulting in a split with the same scoring sequence.
The archers entered the fifth set with the score deadlocked at 4-4. Das recorded a score of 26 (9, 8, 9) but he just fell short of Furukawa's 27 (9, 10, 8).
