Indian shooter Elavenil Valarivan competed at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the women's 10m air rifle. She did not enjoy a remarkable campaign and fell short of qualifying for the final of the event.
The 24-year-old scored 626.5 with her 60 shots in the qualifying round, finishing 16th out of 50 participants. Notably, only the top eight in the qualification round can make it to the finals.
Elavenil Valarivan's career in brief
Hailing from Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, Valarivan earlier represented India at the 2018 ISSF Junior World Cup and clinched a gold medal. She later won a silver at the 2019 World University Games and followed it with a silver medal at the World Junior World Cup Suhl in the same year.
She achieved another milestone by clinching first place at the 2019 ISSF 10-meter Air Rifle World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, scoring 251.7. She registered a fourth-place finish in the finals of the 2019 ISSF World Cup in Munich with a score of 208.3. She claimed her maiden individual gold medal in the senior category, scoring 250.5 at the 10m Air Rifle Asian Air Gun Championships in Taoyuan, Taipei.
Her achievements were recognized by the government of India, and they conferred her with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2022.
In addition, Elavenil Valarivan has also showcased her prowess in the junior competitions, where she won two gold medals at the Junior World Cups and a silver at the 2018 Junior World Championships.
In the following two years, Elavenil Valarivan won three ISSF World Cup medals: two golds (2021 and 2022) and one silver (2022). She also won a bronze medal in the 2022 ISSF World Championships in Cairo. Valarivan made history by defending her gold medal at the ISSF Rio World Cup in 2023, four years after her maiden triumph.
