Indian sailors KC Ganapathy and Varun Thakkar have participated at the Tokyo Olympics in the men’s 49er class. They were eliminated from the tournament after finishing qualification in 17th position.
The Indian pair failed to make a solid start in the event. However, they managed to make an impact as the competition progressed. On the final qualification day of the event, the Indian sailors secured the 16th, ninth, and 14th positions in the first three rounds.
Notably, they have earned a total of 154 net points from their 12 qualification races, with the lower score indicating better performance. Interestingly, the competitors can discard points from their worst race finish, resulting in the net score. Ganapathy and Thakkar dropped a 19 from their fourth qualifying race.
Reigning Olympic champions Peter Burling and Blair Tuke of New Zealand finished at the top of the charts with 52 net points. Meanwhile, Great Britain’s Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell were placed second with 56 net points.
It is worth noting that the top 10 after 12 rounds of qualification can only play in the medal round.
