Lovlina Borgohain, an Indian boxer, clinched a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in the women's welterweight event. With this achievement, she became only the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics. Vijender Singh (bronze at Beijing 2008) and Mary Kom (bronze at London 2012) are the other Indians who have clinched medals at the Olympics.
She took a significant stride toward her dream by securing her sport to make her Olympic debut in Tokyo after reaching the top four at the Asian Boxing Olympic qualifiers in Amman, Jordan in March 2020.
A deeper look at Lovlina Borgohain's Tokyo Olympics journey
The Assam-born boxer earned a spot for the Tokyo Olympics following a win over Uzbekistan’s Maftunakhon Melieva in the quarterfinals of the qualifiers. Notably, there were nine Indian boxers competing at the Tokyo 2020 and only Borgohain returned with a medal.
Lovlina Borgohain began her Tokyo Olympics journey with a grueling 3-2 split-decision win over world championship medalist Nadine Apetz of Germany in the round of 16. She faced former world champion Chen Nien-Chin of Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals.
It is worth mentioning that Lovlina had previously struggled in her last three encounters against Chen. However, this time, Borgohain had the last laugh emerging victorious from the ring. She used her height benefit and landed some heavy hooks and jabs and advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-1 split win.
The 26-year-old faced defeat against world champion and eventual gold medalist Busenaz Surmeneli in the semi-finals. Regardless, her journey to the top four assured her a medal, as two bronze medals were awarded in a boxing event at the Olympics.
Winning a medal at the marquee event, Lovlina Borgohain's status was elevated among some of the world's greatest boxers who have earned both an Olympic medal and a world championship medal.
