India fielded its largest-ever contingent of 126 athletes at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, winning its best haul of seven medals, including one gold, two silver and four bronze medals. To date, Tokyo Olympics 2020 are the most successful Games for India since its first appearance in 1920.
Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu opened India’s medal tally with a silver medal in the women’s 49 kg category. Interestingly, this was also her first medal at the Olympics.
It was India’s second Olympic medal in weightlifting after Karnam Malleswari secured the bronze medal in the Sydney Games in 2000.
Later, ace Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain clinched the bronze medal in the women’s welterweight after losing in the semi-finals to Busenaz Surmeneli from Turkey in the 69 kg category.
She assured India a medal after beating Nien-Chin Chen from Chinese Taipei in the quarter-final.
The third medal of the campaign came from Indian ace badminton player PV Sindhu, the first Indian female to secure two individual Olympic medals. She defeated China’s He Bing Jiao to secure the bronze medal in women’s singles.
Olympic debutant wrestler Ravi Dahiya clinched the silver medal in the men’s 57 kg category after suffering a loss to Zavur Uguev in the final. It was India's second silver medal in wrestling after Sushil Kumar’s 2012 heroics.
The fifth came from the Indian men’s hockey team, bagging a medal after a 41-year-long wait. After being 1-3 down, India staged a grand comeback to defeat Germany 5-4 to claim the bronze medal.
Wrestler Bajrang Punia clinched the bronze medal to make it India’s sixth medal in the tally. The two-time Asian champion, Punia defeated Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov, a World Championships silver-medallist, in the men’s 65kg playoff to clinch the bronze medal.
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra stole the limelight, bagging India’s second-ever gold medal in Games history after Abhinav Bindra’s gold in 2008. Interestingly, it was India’s first track and field medal at the Games. Neeraj threw 87.58m to bag the gold medal in Tokyo.
That was the seventh medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020 for India, making it the nation’s best-ever haul in a single edition after London 2012.
