India's debut in the 1948 London Olympics
India made its Olympic debut in football at the 1948 London Olympics. Representing India internationally for the first time, the Indian football team, led by Talimeren Ao and coached by Balaidas Chatterjee, faced France at East London’s Cricklefield Stadium on July 31, 1948, in front of a 17,000-strong crowd.
Despite losing 2-1, Sarangapani Raman scored India’s first international goal. The team, including Sailen Manna, made headlines for making Les Bleus struggle until the final minute, with eight Indian players playing barefoot.
Four years later, in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, the Indian football team faced a formidable Yugoslavian side in the first round. Despite their spirited performance, India lost 10-1.
Indian Football Team's stellar run at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics
The 1956 Melbourne Olympics was the most iconic moment for Indian football. The team, led by Samar Banerjee and India’s most successful coach Syed Abdul Rahim, reached the first round without playing a preliminary match, as Hungary did not participate.
India defeated hosts Australia 4–2, with Neville D'Souza scoring a hat trick. He netted two goals in the first half—one from a rebound off Samar Banerjee's shot and another from a cross by P. K. Banerjee. D'Souza added a third goal in the second half, and J. Krishnaswamy scored the fourth. Bruce Morrow scored twice for Australia.
In the semi-finals, India lost 4–1 to Yugoslavia. D'Souza scored first, but Yugoslavia responded with three goals, and an own goal by Indian defender Muhammad Salaam sealed the loss.
India then lost 3–0 to Bulgaria in the bronze medal match. D'Souza ended the tournament as joint top scorer with four goals, alongside Todor Veselinović and Dimitar Stoyanov.
India's last-ever campaign at the 1960 Rome Olympics
At the 1960 Rome Olympics, India was placed in a challenging group with Hungary, France, and Peru. They managed to secure a 1-1 draw against France but were defeated by Hungary and Peru. India ended the group stage with two losses and a draw, finishing at the bottom of their group and failing to advance to the next round. This marked the last time India qualified for the Olympics in football.
