Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had a disappointing campaign in their debut Olympic Games in Tokyo. Despite showcasing impressive performances, including a win against Britain, the duo failed to make it to the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles competition at the Tokyo Olympics.
In the men's doubles event, only the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals. Indonesia (+3) and Chinese Taipei (+2) secured the first two positions, leaving India in third place with a score of +1 despite winning two out of their three matches. The point difference eventually turned out to be the criteria for the advancement. Meanwhile, Britain finished at the bottom of the group.
The Indian duo's standout performance in the Tokyo Olympics came in their last group stage match against Britain, where they beat Ben Lane and Sean Vendy 21-17, 21-19. They got off to a tremendous start, pushing the Britons deep into defensive positions with a flurry of powerful shots.
Although the opponents took a narrow lead at the mid-game interval of the first game, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty later grabbed control and clinched that game. They maintained their momentum and won the second game as well.
Prior to this, Satwik-Chirag secured a victory against Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin of Chinese Taipei in their opening match, followed by a defeat against the Indonesian duo of Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo.
