Tarundeep Rai is an Indian archer hailing from Namchi, Sikkim. The 40-year-old veteran made his international debut at the age of 19 years, playing at the Asian Archery Championship 2003 held in Yangon, Myanmar.
Tarundeep was one of the three archers from India who achieved the quota for the Tokyo Olympics. He has represented India in the team event as well as in the individual event. In the individual event, he defeated Ukraine's Oleksii Hunbin 6-4 in the first round. Unfortunately, he lost to Itay Shanny of Israel in the following round. The 40-year-old was eliminated from the event after a defeat in an intense match that ended in a shoot-off.
Tarundeep Rai failed to showcase an impressive performance in the opening set and Itay scored 28 points compared to Tarundeep's 24, giving the Israeli a 2-0 lead. However, the Indian showed progress in the second set, outscoring the opponent with 27 points to Itay's 26 and leveling the scores at 2-2.
The third set resulted in a tie, with both archers scoring 27 points each and the scoreboard read 3-3. The following two sets were tight, with each deciding by just one point.
The Indian won the fourth set with a score of 28-27, while Itay bounced back in the next set with a score of 28-27, thereby tying the overall score at 5-5, eventually leading to a shoot-off. In the one-arrow shoot-off, Tarundeep scored a nine, but his opponent registered a perfect 10 to end the Indian's Tokyo 2020 journey with a 6-5 loss.
Tarundeep Rai's journey in Olympic Games ahead of Tokyo 2020
Tarundeep Rai made his Olympics debut at the 2004 Summer Games and was placed in the 32nd spot in the men's individual ranking round, acquiring a 72-arrow score of 647. Losing to Alexandros Karageorgiou of Greece, with a score of 147-143, his performance concluded with a final ranking of 43rd.
He was also a part of the Indian men's archery team, which secured the 11th position in the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Tarundeep Rai continued his Olympic journey, playing in the India men's recurve team at the 2012 London Olympics. He secured a third-place finish during the London Olympics qualification round held in Ogden, US, in 2012.
