Ace Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain is confident of securing a gold medal at the forthcoming Paris Olympics 2024. The Tokyo Games bronze medalist believes the change in weight category will help her change the color of her medal too.
In the latest episode of Jio Cinema’s ‘The Dreamers’, Lovlina Borgohain candidly shared her experience of her journey from taking up boxing as a sport to winning the Olympic bronze medal.
“Earlier, in most of the competitions I participated in, I could win only the bronze medal. I just couldn't get past that medal color. That has now changed. Ever since I switched my weight category, my performance has improved,” she told Jio Cinema.
“I won four consecutive gold medals in the National Games, National Championships, World Championships, and Asian Championships. I feel confident that I can win a gold medal at the Olympics,” she went on to add.
At the Tokyo Olympics, she became only the third Indian boxer after Mary Kom and Vijender Singh to bag an Olympic medal.
Lovlina Borgohain excelled since changing her weight category
The Assam-born boxer won a bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the women’s 69 kg category. But she has now moved up to 75 kg after her previous weight division wasn't included in the Paris 2024 Olympics program.
Lovlina claimed that she was more comfortable in her new weight category.
“When I chose to change my weight category from 69 kg to 75 kg, everyone thought it would be difficult for me. because gaining weight makes it challenging, but it proved beneficial for me,” she said.
Since changing her weight category, she has secured consecutive gold medals at the National Games, National Championships, World Championships, and Asian Championships.
She also clinched a silver medal at the Asian Games in 2023, thus securing a quota for India at the Paris Olympics.
