National Games 2023 gold medallist javelin thrower Shivpal Singh is training hard ahead of the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Panchakula from June 27 to 30.
Notably, the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships will be the final qualification event for the Paris Olympics 2024. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has set June 30 as the final qualification date for the Summer Games in Paris.
In an Instagram story uploaded by Shivpal, the Tokyo Olympian can be seen taking giant strides on the runway in order to gather the required momentum before releasing the javelin with a perfect flight.
Notably, Shivpal Singh was suspended by NADA in October 2021 after failing an out-of-competition dope test after the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Though the ban period initially was for four years, it was later reduced to one year as the Appeal Panel of the NADA accepted his contention that a “contaminated supplement” was behind his flunked dope test.
Shivpal Singh will aim to breach the Paris Olympics 2024 qualifying mark
At the 37th National Games of India in Goa in November 2023, Shivpal Singh created history after bagging the gold medal in the javelin throw event, covering a distance of 81.17m.
Asian Athletics Championships medallist DP Manu and Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Kumar Jena settled for silver and bronze medals, respectively, with their best throws of 80.48m and 78.47m.
On 20 December 2022, World Athletics revealed the pathway to qualifying for the athletics field events at Paris 2024, including the entry standards athletes must achieve. For men’s javelin throw, athletes who throw the distance of 85.50m will secure the direct qualification for the mega event in Paris.
Most recently, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) stated that the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships will be a mandatory event for all athletes. The inter-state Athletics meet will be the last domestic competition for the athletes to qualify for the Paris Olympics 2024
Notably, Shivpal’s personal best throw is 86.23 meters. He achieved his personal best at the 2019 Asian Championships in Doha.
