Avinash Sable competed in the men's 3000m steeplechase final at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Wednesday, August 7. The Stade de France served as the host to the event.
Sable started the race on a fine note but could not gain momentum throughout the race. It was expected that the 29-year-old would pick up pace after the 2000m mark, but instead, his performance further degraded and he was left well behind. He finished 11th with a timing of 8:14.18.
Sable also couldn't be near his personal best performance of 8:09.91, which he produced in the Diamond League this year. Interestingly, it was the 10th occasion of him breaking his own national record.
In the qualification rounds, Sable finished fifth in his heat with a timing of 8:15.43. With this development, he became the first Indian male athlete to qualify for the men's 3000m steeplechase final.
The Beed-born athlete clocked a timing of 8:11.20 to clinch a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Then, he further rose to fame by winning a gold medal at the Asian Games with a timing of 8:19.50, which was the Games record as well.
Although he had a mediocre year, Sable was coming into the Paris Olympics after winning gold in men's 3000m steeplechase at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships with a timing of 8:30.19s.
