Sukant Kadam has breezed through the many challenges of life, to now stand tall as an Indian Paralympian. The para-shuttler is only a few days away from making his Paralympics debut at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. The 31-year-old will be representing India in the Men's Singles SL4 badminton category.

The World No. 5 in singles, Sukant, acknowledges the magnitude of a Paralympics qualification, but, the dream has only begun. In a conversation with Sportskeeda, Sukant expressed that he is already looking at the next target in sight, a podium finish in Paris.

"It takes almost 15 months for an athlete to qualify for the Paralympics. To represent India in Paris, is a big dream come true. But, now that one dream is over, it is time to look at the next dream. To reach the podium. Being on that podium will be the ultimate dream come true moment," Sukant said.

The mechanical engineer turned sportsperson, Sukant Kadam, shares how he sees the Paralympic Games in a different light to all other competitions. The fact that you only get to chase glory at the prestigious event, once in four years, makes it extra special for him.

"Paralympics gives you a chance once in four years, making it special. The World Championships for example, happen every 2 years, giving you an opportunity to win more often. Also, there are limited slots available at the Summer Games. The value of this occasion, is etched very high for me," he said.

Sukant Kadam was only a young kid when an injury on a cricket field left him with severe disabilities. He has been competing in the category of athletes with standing/low mobility impairments.

"I need to work harder on the mental aspect" - Sukant Kadam speaks on preparation ahead of Paralympics 2024

To do well on a highly competitive stage such as the Paralympics, an athlete must identify their shortcomings and work on them. Sukant Kadam has done just that, leading up to the Games in Paris.

"I had 3 months time since the qualification, to prepare for Paris. For me, mental preparation was the most crucial. I have lost numerous semifinals recently and faced setbacks on the court. I need to work harder on the mental aspect, if I dream of going the full distance," he said.

The conditions in Paris have always been a topic of discussion. Having spent time in the city before, the Maharashtra-born player appears confident.

"Weather does matter in our event. In Paris, it will take longer for the body to warm up, give the cold evenings. I had spent 10-15 days in Paris to acclimatise to the conditions and weather. I feel, that will surely benefit me as it wont come as a surprise," Sukant Kadam concluded.
