Sarbananda Sonowal, India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has expressed his confidence in India’s performance at the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. The Summer Games, set to take place from July 26 to August 11, will see the Indian contingent aiming to surpass their historic medal haul from the Tokyo Olympics 2020, where they won a record seven medals.

While celebrating Olympic Day with the Assam Olympics Association on Sunday, June 23, Sonowal conveyed his excitement about the Summer Olympics and shared insights into India’s rigorous preparations for the event.

“The Summer Olympics is only a few weeks away and I am super excited about the wonderful prospect of India in the Games. I am confident that our athletes, who are training hard now, will deliver a strong and outstanding performance, making India proud,” said Sarbananda Sonowal.

Sarbananda Sonowal on Assam’s growth in India’s sports sector

Sarbananda Sonowal also serves as the president of the Assam Olympics Association (AOA). As a part of the Olympics “Let’s Move” campaign, he inaugurated a marathon in Assam to encourage participation in sports and an active lifestyle.

“Sports have united human society for ages, wielding immense power to enhance physical and mental well-being while fostering coordination and camaraderie. By embracing the profound significance of the Olympics and incorporating sports into our daily lives, we can all contribute to building a healthy, vibrant, and harmonious society,” said Sonowal.

During the event, Sonowal highlighted Assam’s progress in sports development and the state’s role in hosting significant sporting events. He believes these efforts have made Assam a vital contributor to India’s sports industry.

“The state has successfully hosted various national and international tournaments, including the South Asian Games in Guwahati, the third Khelo India Youth Competition, FIFA U-17 World Cup matches, and the AIBA Youth Women’s World Boxing Championship. These events have positioned Assam as a key player in the country’s sports sector,” Sonowal added.
