Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the women's 50kg final at the Paris Olympics 2024 for being overweight by 100 grams, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed.
"It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand," the statement read.
Vinesh's weight was checked in the morning ahead of her medal bout, which is scheduled for later tonight. However, the 29-year-old wrestler was 100 grams overweight and on the verge of losing a medal at the Olympic Games.
Vinesh Phogat was spot on with her weight on Tuesday during the round of 16, quarter-final and semi-final bouts. She had to stay within 50kg on both days of the competition but failed to do so ahead of their gold medal bout.
According to the Indian Express, the wrestler was 2 kg overweight post her semi-final bout on Tuesday night. The source also added that Vinesh Phogat worked out the whole night to reduce her weight but unlikely couldn't meet the weight criteria.
The Indian delegation pleaded to get Vinesh Phogat some time to lose 100 grams, but all their requests were to no avail.
