It was a tough day in the WTT Contender Bangkok 2024 for the Indian paddlers as three men’s singles players bowed out of the campaign after their poor performances in the Round of 32 alongside a mixed doubles pair from the quarter-final.
Paris-bound men’s singles players Sharath Kamal, and Harmeet Desai have already exited the tournament and it’s a major setback for Team India in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics 2024. However, the reserve player Sathiyan Gnanasekaran is still in contention.
Manush Shah defeated South Korea’s Jang Woojin by 12-14, 11-9, 11-7, and 11-9 to storm into the pre-quarterfinal while Sathiyan Gnanasekaran stunned Canada’s Edward Ly by 11-6, 7-11, 11-8 and 11-8 to make it Round of 16.
It’s the same story in the women’s singles too as Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, and Archana Kamath are part of the Paris 2024 squad. However, singles players Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula didn’t compete in the WTT Contender Bangkok event.
Archana Girish suffered an exit from the opening round after losing to Japan's Hitomi Sato. On the other hand, all women’s singles players have already been eliminated from the campaign.
In the mixed doubles event, the Indian pair of Diya Parag and Manush Shah couldn’t create an impact as they suffered a massive drubbing over the Japan duo of Hina Hayata and Tomokazu Harimoto, losing by 8-11, 6-11, 5-11.
Manush Shah and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran are the only two Indian players who will be in action on Day 5 in WTT Contender Bangkok.
