Rio de Janeiro, January 21 (IANS)
An off-duty police officer has shot dead Brazilian surfer Ricardo dos Santos after an altercation outside his home.
The 24-year-old was shot three times when he reportedly resisted against the officer following a brawl on Monday, reports bbc.com.
He underwent four operations after being rushed to a hospital but died on Tuesday.
Dos Santos has won several international surfing awards and came into prominence after knocking out 11-time world champion Kelly Slater out of an event in 2012, bbc.com said.
It was still unclear what transpired that led to him being shot.
The officer who shot Santos has been detained but not yet charged. He has said he shot the surfer in self-defence.
