India’s lone female surfer Kamali Prakash made the cut for the third round in the ongoing ASF Asian Surfing Championships 2024 being held in Thulusdhoo, Thailand. Earlier on Day 1, three male surfers also qualified for Round 3 of the competition.
Competing in the fifth heat, Kamali Prakash secured a total score of 7.27 to bag the qualification for the third round. Japan's Arisa Ishii topped the heat with a score of 8.77 while Maldives' Shaziya Saeed was at the third spot with a score of 2.04. Notably, the Championships are the qualifiers for the Asian Games 2026 with the sport making its debut at the games in 2026.
In U18 Girls, Kamali Prakash failed to make it to the third round after securing a score of 5 in the first round to settle for the third rank. In the second round, she bagged the third position with a score of 4.73 to end her campaign in this category.
In the U18 Boys category, two Indian surfers made it to the third round after Tayin Arun got eliminated in the second round with a score of 6.10. On the other hand, Harish Prakash (4.97) and Kishore Kumar (12.86) secured the second and top spots in their respective heats to qualify for Round 3.
It’s worth noting that after the success of the first Asian Surfing Championships in 2019 in China, the organization committee of the Asian Games decided to include surfing as a sport in the 2026 Asian Games.
Three Indian male surfers already made it to Round 3 in ASF Asian Surfing Championships
Earlier on Day 1, three Indian make surfers made it to the third round. Harish Muthu topped his heat with a score of 11.37 while Srikanth scored 10.57 in his heat with Ajeesh Ali scoring 9.60 to secure their spots in the third round.
India is alongside Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in their pool in the ongoing ASF Asian Surfing Championships. The Surfing Federation of India (SFI) has sent eight surfers for the ASF Asian Surfing Championships. While three surfers are part of the men’s team, one surfer made the cut in women's. Four surfers are part of the junior category.
The Asian Surfing Championships will end on August 27. More than 100 athletes from 20 nations are competing in the competition.
