SOUNDBITE: (English) Joel Parkinson (on his heat against Damien Hobgood):“I kind of gave him the inside, or he wouldn’t give up the inside, so then I was ‘alright, you can take it.’ That first wave come and I was like ‘ah.’ I just heard everyone cheering and I thought for sure it was an eight or a nine to start with and it’s going to be a good heat, and I don’t know, just was consistent. So it was just so much fun to be out there, just gentlemen’s rules and it was so much fun.”
Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater progessed past Putra Hermawan.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Kelly Slater (on his heat against Putra Hermawan):“Oh my gosh, that was painful to be in that heat to be honest. I don’t know about watching it, but being out there and really the two best waves that came, at least the best wave that came he got. I did fall on that one. I tried a big hook at the start and that was probably going to be a good wave. But that one that he…. I was looking at it going ‘that thing’s a ten if he just pulls up and gets his line’ and he just decided to go low. I dodged a bullet there, but yes, he had the waves to get me and he just didn’t stay on.”
Elsewhere Taj Burrow of Australia was dominant in the day’s opening heat, easing past Brazil’s Miguel Pupo by 15.83 points to 9.17.
