Panaji, Jan 20 (IANS) India’s men and women paddlers kept a clean slate at the ongoing table tennis events of the third Lusofonia Games here Monday.
In the stage 1 group league, India defeated Macau 3-0 in third round after having accounted for Angola Sunday in the five-team group, which is played on a league format in the first round.
The Indian boys were too hot for Macau to handle as was evident from the score line, despite the island state having players of Chinese origin. Anthony Amal Raj defeated Hoi Wa Chang 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 and Harmeet Desai followed it up with a 12-10, 11-5, 11-5 victory to put India 2-0 up.
Then it was left to Soumyajit Ghosh to accelerate the proceedings with a sweep when he defeated Lei Chon Cheoki 11-5, 11-5, 11-4 less than 15 minutes.
The Indian girls also followed suit and defeated Angola 3-1 in the round 4 after having defeated Sri Lanka and Macau by the same 3-0 margin.
Madhurika Patkar ran through her Angolan opponent Maria Samalinha 11-3, 11-5, 11-5 and then Ankita Das gave India 2-0 lead with a straight game win of 11-6, 11-3, 11-4 over Jerusa Borges.
Local girl Tanisi Kirtani then dropped a rubber to Angola’s Ruth Tavares, the latter winning 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.
In the fourth rubber, Ankita Das defeated Maria Samalinha 11-5, 11-6, 11-4 to complete the formality.
