Inter-Institutional TT: Manika, Shamini, Mouma lose

Kolkata, Aug 26 - Three seeds bowed out of the women’s section while the men’s draw went according to rankings at the 42nd All-India Inter-Institutional Table Tennis Championships here Sunday.

In the women’s singles, titleholder and fifth seed Manika Batra bit the dust in the pre-quarters to unseeded Madhurika Patkar 2-4 at the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra. Second seed Shamini Kumaresan lost to No. 7 Divya Deshpande 1-4 and third seed Mouma Das went down 3-4 to sixth ranked Mousmi Paul in the quarter finals. All the three losers represent Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB).

If Manika lacked concentration against a consistent Patkar, Shamini was guilty of being complacent while Mouma lost what could have been a one-point advantage at 9-all in the decider by hitting a forehand wide and from there she had to fight a lost case. Finally, Mousmi just shut her out to enter the semifinals.

In the semifinals showdown Monday morning, it will be Poulomi versus Ankita Das and Divya Deshpande versus Mousmi Paul.

In the men’s draw, things went as per plans with reigning champion and top seed Anthony Amalraj ousting G. Sathiyan 4-1.

Soumyajit Ghosh downed fifth ranked Soumyadeep Roy 4-1 in the top-half. Both Amalraj and Ghosh will clash in the first semifinal.

From the bottom half, sixth seed Achanta Sharath Kamal defeated Sanil Shetty 4-1 to meet tenth seed Harmeet Desai in the second semifinal.

Desai got a walkover from Subhajit Saha who pulled out due to high fever.
