The Indian paddlers had a mixed outing on the seventh day of China Smash 2024 at Shijingshan Shougang Park in Beijing, China. Let’s take a look at how the contests panned out.
On Wednesday, October 2, Indian men's doubles duo of Manush Shah and Manav Thakkar stunned Chile's Nicolas Burgos and Gustavo Gomez by 3-1 to secure their spot in the quarter-finals.
The Indian pair will next take on the Chinese duo Liang Jingkun and Wang Chuqin on Thursday, October 3.
On the other hand, in the women's doubles pre-quarter-final, Indian pair Ayhika and Sutirtha suffered an exit after losing to Chinese Taipei pair Cheng I-Ching and Li Yu-Jhun by 1-3.
Earlier on Tuesday, October 1, Diya Chitale and Manush Shah were part of the mixed doubles event as they locked horns with the Chinese duo of Xue Fei and Qian Tianyi. Unfortunately, the Indian pair couldn’t create an impact as they suffered a straight-game defeat.
Interestingly, there was no intent displayed by the Indian mixed doubles duo in the pre-quarter-final contest as the final scores read 4-11, 6-11, and 4-11 to bow out of the competition with a dismal show. Notably, they received a bye in the Round of 32.
Overall, Indian paddlers had a poor outing in China Smash 2024. In the men's singles category, Sharath Kamal and Manav Thakkar suffered elimination in the opening round of the main draw.
Earlier in the qualification draw, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Snehit Suravajjula, and Harmeet Desai bowed out, courtesy of poor performances in the first round.
In a surprising turn of events in the women's singles category, India's top-ranked paddlers Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula faced exits from the opening round as they suffered losses against Japan's Mima Ito and Miu Hirano, respectively.
In the women's singles qualification draw, Ayhika Mukherjee, Sutirtha Mukherjee, Diya Parag, and Yashaswini Ghorpade couldn’t live up to the expectations as they faced an exit from singles.
