Tokyo Olympian paddler Sutirtha Mukherjee stunned the World No. 8 table tennis player Shin Yu-bin from South Korea in the women’s singles quarter-final in the ongoing WTT Contender Lagos 2024 on Saturday (June 22). Interestingly, Shin Yu-bin was the defending champion after lifting the women's singles title in the WTT Contender Lagos 2023 edition, defeating China’s Li Yake 4-2 in the final.

It turned out to be a tough quarter-final clash between the World No. 125 Surithra and Yu-bin. Eventually, the Indian paddler came out on top with a scoreline of 3-2 (11-9, 3-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6).

On the other hand, Sreeja Akula, the World No. 43, defeated Ghorpade Yashaswini, World No. 99 by 3-0 (11-6, 11-9,11-8) in an all-Indian quarter-final clash. Surithra and Sreeja Akula will next compete in the semi-final later on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, another women’s singles Indian paddler Ayhika Mukherjee bagged a win over Egypt's Farida Badawy by 3-0 (11-6, 14-12, 11-5) in the quarter-final to set up her semi-final clash against Ding Yijie from China.

Unfortunately, in the women's doubles semi-final, Sutirtha and Ayhika Mukherjee suffered a defeat against Sreeja Akula and Archana Girish by 0-3 (7-11, 5-11, 10-12). With Yashaswini and Diya Parag also qualifying, it's going to be an all-Indian final.
