Eintracht Frankfurt History

Eintracht Frankfurt is a German professional football club that presently plays in the Bundesliga, the top tier league of Germany. Founded in 1899, Frankfurt have come a long way and have seen various ups and downs in over 120 years of its existence.

Frankfurt’s history goes back to 1911, when two clubs, Frankfurter Fußball-Club Viktoria von 1899 and Frankfurter Fußball-Club Kickers von 1899, both formed in 1899, merged to become Frankfurter Fußball Verein. Over a series of mergers and separations, Eintracht Frankfurt, the football club was born.

Frankfurt have also seen many greats of football play for them. Karl-Heinz Körbel holds the record for the most appearances for Frankfurt. The centre back had 688 appearances for the club in which he scored an impressive 48 times. Bernd Hölzenbein holds the record for the most goals scored for the club. The German winger found the back of the net 192 times out of which 160 were in Bundesliga, a club record.

Frankfurt Manager - Adi Hutter

Eintracht Frankfurt is currently managed by Adolf "Adi" Hütter. This former Austrian midfielder has been the manager of the club since May 2018. Hütter joined Frankfurt from BSC Young Boys with whom he won the Swiss Super League. Under his management, Frankfurt managed to reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League, losing to Chelsea on penalties.

The Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt, Germany is the club’s home ground. It opened up in 1925 and was originally known as Waldstadion which means Forest Stadium in English. The 51,500 capacity stadium is in the list of the 10 biggest stadiums in Germany. It serves as the home stadium for Eintracht Frankfurt and its millions of fans.

Eintracht Meaning

Eintracht is a German word which means unity, harmony and concord. If this word is used with other words such as Eintracht Frankfurt, it is equivalent to United Frankfurt. The name Eintracht Frankfurt came about when Frankfurter FV joined the gymnastics club Frankfurter Turngemeinde von 1861 to form TuS Eintracht Frankfurt von 1861.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s Logo features an eagle in red with the letter ‘E’ across its centre. This is directly

derived from Frankfurt city’s coat of arms. The eagle is a reference to the 13th-century one-headed imperial eagle. The period between 1980 to 1999 saw a black and white crest. Later a more traditional crest was adopted.

Eintracht Frankfurt have seen a number of highs and lows in their long history. They have been a part of Bundesliga for the past 8 years now, their last relegation coming in the 2010-11 season. Frankfurt returned to Bundesliga the very next season coming 2nd in the second tier of the Bundesliga.

Bernd Hölzenbein is Eintracht Frankfurt’s all-time top goal-scorer. He has netted the ball a record 192 times for the Frankfurt club in his 481 appearances across various leagues. Out of the 192 goals, 160 of them were scored in Bundesliga, which is a club record for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Eintracht Frankfurt Nickname

From the Frankfurt crest comes the club’s nickname “Die Adler”, which translates to “The Eagles”. Another nickname that the club have been given is “Launische Diva” which translates to “Moody Diva”.

This nickname was given to the club in the early 1990s due to their erratic behaviour of losing to weak teams but defeating top teams considered to be stronger than them. Another nickname popular among supporters is SGE, taken from the club's old official name Sportgemeinde Eintracht (Frankfurt).

Frankfurt Trophies

Eintracht Frankfurt have laid its hands on a number of trophies over the years. 1959 saw them winning the German Championship and the club won its first and only Bundesliga title in the 1997-98 season. Eintracht Frankfurt have also claimed the DFB-Pokal 5 times, the most recent of them coming in the 2017-18 season and 2 consecutive titles coming in the 1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons.

The 1979-80 season saw Frankfurt win their only UEFA Cup/Europa League title.

Eintracht Frankfurt e.V. is a listed sports club which offers over 50 different sports under it. Eintracht Frankfurt e.V. have over 60,000 members as of September 2018. Eintracht Frankfurt Fußball AG is a subsidiary of the parent club and was founded on 1st July 2000. It is presently headed by a management board consisting of Fredi Bobic, Oliver Frankenbach and Axel Hellmann.

Jürgen Grabowski

Jürgen Grabowski is a former German forward who played for Frankfurt from 1965 to 1980. In his 441 appearances for the club, he scored 109 goals and he won the UEFA Cup as well as two DFB-Pokal titles with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Anthony Yeboah

In a span of five years(1990-1995), Anthony Yeboah left such an impact on Eintracht Frankfurt that he will be remembered by the fans for many many years. This Ghanian striker scored 68 times for the club in his 123 appearances for them.

Bernd Hölzenbein

This German striker remains in Eintracht Frankfurt’s record books till date. Hölzenbein is Frankfurt’s all time top goal-scorer with 192 goals to his name.

Karl-Heinz Körbel

This German centre-back holds Frankfurt’s record of the most appearances for the club(688). Körbel is currently the club’s director of football and runs their academy.

Augustine Azuka Okocha

Augustine Azuka Okocha, popularly known was Jay-Jay Okocha is Nigerian former professional footballer. An attacking midfielder by nature, he scored the Goal Of The Season for Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1992-93 season. In his 90 appearances for the club, he became a fan-favourite and scored 16 times for the club.
