In an episode, Chandler speculates that Gunther's last name is "Central Perk," which was intended to be a joke for the viewers. Gunther was never given a last name.

The most well-known character on the American hit sitcom Friends, after the six leads, was played by James Michael Tyler as Gunther. He made close to 150 appearances on the show. His recurring role is primarily known for his unspoken love for Rachel and hatred for anyone dating her, though Ross is typically the target of his sarcasm.

James received a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2018 and after battling the disease for three years, he passed away in 2021 at the age of 59.

Who is James Michael Tyler?

James Michael Tyler, an American actor who played Gunther on the NBC sitcom Friends, was born on May 28, 1962. He worked as a production assistant before becoming an actor. His early work included serving as Little Boy's and Fat Man's production assistants. He also played Oscar Bevins in the suspenseful movie Motel Blue from 1997.

He relocated to Los Angeles in 1988, where he worked at Guitar Center and a café called the Bourgeois Pig. Here he met Barbara Chadsey, his 1995 bride, who would become his first wife. James Michael Tyler portrayed Gunther on the sitcom Friends from 1994 to 2004.

An assistant director on Friends had the idea to put him behind the counter of Central Perk in order to make the set seem more "realistic" because of his real-life experience as a barista. Due to his appearances in 148 of Friends' 236 episodes over the course of a decade, he is the actor who appears on the show the most frequently.

A friend who is a hair stylist asked Tyler if he could practice bleaching his hair the night before his debut on Friends. Tyler concurred, and Friends' creators loved it so much that it ended up becoming a permanent part of his character. He ultimately had to bleach his hair once a week for ten years.

Tyler formally opened the temporary Central Perk pop-up replica in London in 2009 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the television series Friends. Fans could apply for tickets to receive a free coffee and view show memorabilia during its two-week opening period in September and October.

He made appearances at a Central Perk replica in SoHo in 2014 to celebrate Friends' 20th anniversary. When Matt LeBlanc failed in his attempt to convince the other Friends main cast members to appear in the promotional video for the fictitious television series "Pucks," Tyler made an appearance in the Showtime comedy "Episodes" as an ice hockey coach.

How did James Michael Tyler die?

After a battle with prostate cancer, which was initially identified in 2018, Tyler passed away at his Los Angeles home in 2021. According to his representative, Toni Benson, "Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures. If you met him once, you made a friend for life," the statement read.

The actor was in a lot of movies and TV shows, including "Scrubs," "Modern Music," and "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," but he is best known for playing Gunther, the manager of the Central Perk coffee shop and Rachel's admirer, for ten seasons on the classic 90s TV show. Marta Kauffman and David Crane, who co-created "Friends," said in a statement to CNN that Tyler was a "genuinely kind, sweet man."

When Tyler appeared on NBC's Today Show in June, he announced his stage-four prostate cancer diagnosis for the first time and claimed that it was discovered during a routine physical when he was 56 years old. He claimed that he was unable to walk because the cancer had spread to his bones. Hormone therapy was used to treat him.

What was Gunther's role in Friends?

Gunther is a constant presence in the friends' daily lives, but he never enters their close-knit group. This turns into an ongoing joke. When Chandler introduces Gunther as his best man at Ross' bachelor party, Gunther immediately asks, "What's my last name?" With a dejected reply, Chandler says, "Central Perk?" Ross's celebration of receiving tenure is another illustration of this. When Ross requests six glasses, Gunther replies, "You want me to join you?" with some optimism. "Oh, I thought Joey was here." "Five is good," says Ross.

However, Gunther gets along with the friends well enough to frequently receive invitations to their informal gatherings, including Phoebe's birthday party, Rachel's birthday party, Emily's farewell party, Ross' bachelor party, Rachel's early surprise birthday party, and Chandler and Monica's Halloween party. Although he is excluded from the official celebrations, such as Ross' wedding in London and Monica and Chandler's nuptials, he does attend Phoebe's wedding.
