American tennis was in good hands in 2024, as some players enjoyed a good season. Top players like Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff ended the year within the top 5 of men's and women's tennis, respectively.
Besides, the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Jessica Pegula also had a pretty decent year. They were not as successful as Fritz and Gauff but managed to make their mark.
On that note, let us take a look at three defining moments that shaped US tennis in 2024:
#3. Jessica Pegula reaching the US Open final:
30-year-old Pegula has been one of the more consistent female players in the recent past and finished the year as the World No. 7. The American is yet to win a Grand Slam, but reached tantalizingly close to doing it in 2024, making the final of the US Open on her home soil.
Pegula lost only a solitary set before the final of the tournament. One of her wins came against Iga Swiatek, the then-World No. 1, whom she beat in the quarterfinal. Pegula lost in straight sets to Aryna Sabalenka in the final but gave a tough fight to the latter. The American's solid performance remained one of the highlights of the tournament.
#2. Coco Gauff winning the WTA Finals:
Gauff, the US Open champion in 2023, failed to win any Grand Slam title this year. However, she made amends by winning the WTA Finals in Riyadh in November, beating Qinwen Zheng of China in the final.
The 20-year-old American lost only a solitary set in the entire tournament. She beat both Swiatek and Sabalenka in straight sets en route to reaching the final. Gauff finished the year as the World No. 3 and became the third woman ever to exceed 30 million dollars in annual income.
#1. Taylor Fritz reaching the US Open final:
No American man has managed to win the US Open since Andy Roddick in 2003. Fritz became the first American male since 2003 to reach the US Open final this year. The 27-year-old beat compatriot Frances Tiafoe in a thrilling semifinal, but lost to Jannik Sinner in the final. The American finished the year as the World No. 4.
After a very long time, an American featured in each of the men's and women's finals of the US Open. Neither Fritz nor Pegula managed to attain ultimate glory, but their performances meant that good things had started to happen in US tennis.
