Barbora Krejcikova capped off a special Wimbledon 2024 campaign, as she won the women's singles tournament after beating seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the final. It was the Czech's very first title on grass courts.
Krejcikova was seeded 31st at the London Major and started by edging out Veronika Kudermetova 7-6(4), 6-7(1), 7-5 in the opening round. She followed it up with straight-set wins over Katie Volynets, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, 11th seed Danielle Collins and 13th seed Jelena Ostapenko to reach the semifinals.
Here, the Czech came back from a set down to beat Elena Rybakina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 before her final victory over Jasmine Paolini. Krejcikova thus became only the third woman to win both the singles and doubles titles at Wimbledon, the others being Serena Williams and Venus Williams.
The Czech won the eighth singles title of her career and also attained a few milestones in the process. On that note, let's take a look at three of them.
#3. One of just two current active players who've won French Open and Wimbledon
Along with former World No. 1 Simona Halep, Barbora Krejcikova is the only other active tennis player who has won the singles titles at French Open and Wimbledon.
Halep's triumphs came in 2018 (French Open) and 2019 (Wimbledon), while Krejcikova's victories came a little later. She won the clay-court Major in 2021 and the London Major in 2022.
All-in-all, the Czech has nine Grand Slams to her name, having won seven doubles Majors. Two of these came at Wimbledon in 2018 and 2022.
#2. Second-least number of matches won in a season ahead of Wimbledon triumph
Barbora Krejcikova won just seven out of 16 matches entering this year's Wimbledon Championships. Only Venus Williams had fewer match wins (six) in 2000 ahead of that year's edition of the London Major.
Krejcikova's best performance prior to Wimbledon 2024 was a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka. In fact, the Czech suffered five defeats in a row at one point before reaching the quarterfinals of the Birmingham Classic.
Following her Wimbledon triumph, Krejcikova now has 14 wins out of 23 singles matches so far in the 2024 season.
#1. Second-lowest ranked woman to win Wimbledon
Barbora Krejcikova was the World No. 32 when she entered Wimbledon 2024. By winning the tournament, the Czech has become the second-lowest ranked woman to clinch the singles title at the London Major since the inception of the WTA rankings in 1975.
Only Marketa Vondrousova was ranked lower than Krejcikova, as she was 42nd during her historic triumph at Wimbledon 2023. Apart from the two Czechs, Venus Williams is the only other woman to win the grass Major whilst being below the Top 30 of the WTA rankings.
Interestingly, both of Barbora Krejcikova's Grand Slams have come when she was below the Top 30. The Czech was ranked 33rd in the world when she won the French Open in 2021 after defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final.
