Novak Djokovic is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to grace the Australian Open courts. The Serbian superstar has won the title in Melbourne an impressive ten times, more than any other male player in history. Even impressive in the fact that the 24-time Grand Slam champion has a 91% win rate at the Rod Laver Area, having only lost nine matches in Melbourne throughout his career.
Djokovic reached the semifinals of the Australian Open last year but ended up losing to the eventual winner Jannik Sinner. This was the Serb's first defeat in the semi-final in tournament history and a result that set the tone for the rest of his season.
The Serb is entering this year’s tournament at the back of a shock quarterfinal exit at the Brisbane International and given certain factors, there is a fair chance of him not doing as well in Melbourne as he is used to.
On that note, let us take a look at three reasons why Novak Djokovic could struggle at the Australian Open 2025
#1. Relatively disappointing runs at the Grand Slams in 2024
Novak Djokovic ended the 2024 season without winning a single Grand Slam title. This was the first time that the Serbian had failed to win a Major throughout the season since 2017. Apart from Grand Slams, Djokovic failed in other ATP tournaments too, going trophyless for the first time since 2008.
After his semi-final defeat in Melbourne early in 2024, Djokovic had to withdraw from the French Open after a knee injury. The Serbian then reached the final of Wimbledon before getting beaten in straight sets by Carlos Alcaraz. Later, the former World No. 1 was knocked out of the US Open in the third round.
#2. The pressure of winning a record-breaking 25th Major
Novak Djokovic is chasing history every time he steps foot at a Grand Slam. The Serbian star is one Grand Slam away from winning a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title, a feat no player in the history of tennis in the Open Era has achieved.
Djokovic has currently won 24 Majors and is tied with Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history. A record-breaking 25th title would elevate the Serbian over everybody else and cement his place as the greatest tennis player of all time.
However, the pressure to achieve such a historic feat could weigh heavily on Djokovic's shoulders. The Serbian has been stuck at 24 Grand Slam titles for more than a year and with an ageing body and fierce competitors, this might be the last chance for him to win a Grand Slam title in his beloved Melbourne.
#3. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner's emergence as the top duo in men's tennis
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have emerged as the two best men's tennis players. Both young superstars are chasing history at the Australian Open 2025.
Sinner is aiming to defend a Grand Slam title for the first time in his career. The Italian star won his maiden Major in Melbourne last year and followed it up with a US Open title win later in the year. With a lot of controversy surrounding his doping scandal, Sinner will be keen to impress on the court and defend his Australian Open title.
Similarly, Carlos Alcaraz is chasing a career Grand Slam at the Australian Open. The Spaniard has already won the French Open, the Wimbledon and the US Open and will be keen to add the Australian Open under his belt.
Lately, Djokovic has struggled against Sinner and Alcaraz in Grand Slam tournaments and the Serbian will have to face them earlier in the tournament than usual due to his lower ranking.
