Carlos Alcaraz lifted his fourth Grand Slam trophy at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, beating seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in the final. With the win, he also successfully defended the title that he had won 12 months ago.
Alcaraz had to battle hard over the course of the fortnight, but was dominant in the final. The Spaniard dropped his serve only once en route to the 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory.
The win has seen Alcaraz achieve a handful of milestones, each more impressive than the other. Here, we have listed four that stand out from among the lot:
Carlos Alcaraz is the youngest player to capture Channel Slam
With his latest Wimbledon victory, Carlos Alcaraz became just the sixth player to complete a Channel Slam — the rare feat of winning the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year.
At 21 years and 70 days old, he is in fact the youngest player to have achieved the feat. Last month, he defeated Alexander Zverev in five sets to capture his first French Open title.
Before Alcaraz, Bjon Borg was the youngest player to capture the Channel Slam. In an astonishing feat, the Swede completed the rare double in three consecutive years — 1978 (as a 22-year-old), 1979, and 1980.
The other four players to have captured the Channel Slam include Rod Laver, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Second player to win first 4 Grand Slam finals in Open Era after Roger Federer
The 2024 Wimbledon was the fourth Grand Slam victory for Carlos Alcaraz in as many finals.
The youngster’s incredible start to his career, winning all four of his first men’s singles finals, has been accomplished only on one prior occasion in the Open Era. The player who did it, you ask? The answer is 20-time Grand Slam and eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer.
The Swiss legend embodied big-match composure. He won all seven of his first Grand Slams finals — three Wimbledon and two Australian and US Open each — and his first loss came at the 2006 French Open Final against none other than Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz has captured the 2022 US Open, the 2023 French Open as well as the 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon titles.
Third youngest to defend Wimbledon title
By successfully defending his Wimbledon at the age of 21 years and 70 days, Carlos Aclaraz has become the third youngest player to do so.
Alcaraz had stunned the tennis world by coming back from two sets down to defeat Novak Djokovic in last year’s championship match. He was much more dominant this year, winning in straight sets.
The youngest player to have successfully defended a Wimbledon title is Boris Becker, who went back-to-back in 1985 and 1986 as an 18-year-old. He had beaten Kevin Curren and Ivan Lendl in the two finals, respectively.
Bjorn Borg, meanwhile, defended his Wimbledon title at the 1977 Wimbledon at the age of 21 years and 26 days. In a display of absolute dominance, he went on to lift the trophy in the next three editions as well.
One of three players to have winning percentage of 90% at Wimbledon
Carlos Alcaraz now holds an impressive 18-2 win-loss record at the All England Club, translating to a 90% winning percentage. He had come into the tournament with the figure standing at 11-2, but his seven match wins over the course of the fortnight has pushed the numbers up. The youngster has now not lost a match at the venue in two years.
Only two other players boast of a winning percentage of 90% or better at Wimbledon. Both, however, have played way more matches at the grasscourt Slam as compared to Alcaraz.
Pete Sampras’ 63–7 record sees him equal Alcaraz's 90% score, while Bjorn Borg leads the list with an incredible 51–4 win-loss, translating to a winning percentage of 92.4%.
