The first round of singles matches at the Australian Open 2025 finally came to an end on Day 3 of the tournament. Daniil Medvedev, the runner-up here on three occasions, was down two sets to one in the first round against World No. 418 Kasidit Samrej. However, the Russian was able to stage a comeback to win in five sets.
Medvedev wasn't the only big name to be tested on Tuesday as 13th seed Holger Rune needed five sets to get past Zhang Zhizhen. While they struggled, other top players who took to the court on the third day, such as Taylor Fritz, Hubert Hurkacz, Ben Shelton, and Alex de Minaur, all made it through to the next round with straight sets victories.
On the women's side, Elena Rybakina and Jasmine Paolini stormed to easy wins, while their top 10 cohort Emma Navarro staged an escape act to down Peyton Stearns. However, not all high-profile names made it through. With that in mind, here's a look at the most shocking results from Day 3 of the Australian Open:
#4 - Tomas Martin Etcheverry def. (32) Flavio Cobolli
Etcheverry beat Cobolli 6-7 (8), 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 to kick off a day of upsets on Tuesday. The Argentine had struggled to perform his best on hardcourts last year, and had a 12-14 record on the surface. Cobolli had a decent start to the season, reaching the quarterfinals of the United Cup with his team.
While Cobolli did struggle with an injury at last week's ASB Classic, it didn't appear as if he was that bothered by the same in Melbourne. The young Italian claimed a tight first set but played second fiddle to Etcheverry in the next two sets, and eventually fizzled out in the fourth set.
Coblli reached the third round on his Australian Open debut last year, and at the US Open as well. For someone expected to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Jannik Sinner, a first-round exit was certainly disappointing.
#3 - Corentin Moutet def. (25) Alexei Popyrin
Popyrin won his first Masters 1000 title at last year's Canadian Open. A few weeks later, he also advanced to the fourth round of a Major for the first time at the US Open, that too by beating defending champion Novak Djokovic along the way. Given his rise, the home crowd was expecting him to make it past the first hurdle in Melbourne at the very least.
Moutet, meanwhile, had other plans. After losing the first set, he regrouped quickly to beat Popyrin 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. It marked just his fourth career win in Melbourne. As for the Aussie, it was another underwhelming outing for him at his home Slam, especially after his heroics last year.
#2 - Camila Osorio def. (31) Maria Sakkari
Sakkari is still trying to find her footing after shutting down her 2024 season earlier than expected due to an injury. When the Australian Open 2025 draw was revealed and she was slated to take on Camila Osorio, many backed the Greek to come out on top.
Osorio, after all, had only won a single match across her previous appearances Down Under, compared to Sakkari's 14 wins at the venue. The Colombian came out of the gates swinging, and bagged the first set to take the lead.
With her back up against the wall, Sakkari dug deep to take the second set in a tie-break. Both were evenly matched in the deciding set. With the score at 4-4, the Greek fought hard to hold her serve but eventually her opponent's relentless defense proved to be too much for her.
Having secured the crucial break of serve, Osorio then proceeded to serve out the match for a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4 win. She will now aim to reach the third round of a Major for the second time. Meanwhile, it's back to the drawing board for Sakkari.
#1 - (Q) Joao Fonseca def. (9) Andrey Rublev
18-year-old Fonseca announced his arrival in style with the biggest upset of the day as he defeated World No. 9 Rublev 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-6 (5). The Brazilian youngster has been on a hot streak in recent months. He won the Next Gen ATP Finals to close out 2024 on a high.
Fonseca started 2025 with a title at the Canberra Challenger. He then came through the qualifying rounds of the Australian Open to ensure his Major debut, and what a memorable debut it has been for him. Coincidentally, he became the first teenager to beat a top 10 player in the first round of a Major since Rublev did the same at the US Open 2017.
Given Fonseca's form, this was expected to be a tough challenge for Rublev. However, no one expected him to go down in straight sets. The teenager will face Lorenzo Sonego in the second round, which is also an extremely winnable encounter for him.
