Day 5 of the Paris Olympics produced some shocking results in both men's and women's tennis. Top seeds like Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic were both in action in the men's division and both were successful in avoiding any upsets and confirmed their place in the next round.
Alcaraz breezed past Roman Safiullin 6-4, 6-2 to book a place in the quarterfinals. However, the Spaniard lost in his doubles match with Rafael Nadal. Meanwhile, Djokovic continued his quest for a maiden Olympic gold by beating Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-3 to make the last eight of the competition.
While most of the top-ranked players managed to get a win, several shocking defeats raised eyebrows. Here is a list of four such results from Day 5 of the Paris Olympics:
#4 Lorenzo Musetti defeats Taylor Fritz
Italian hotshot Lorenzo Musetti faced off American Taylor Fritz in the Round of 16 at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Musetti is Italy's only hope for a medal in men's singles after Jannik Sinner withdrew, citing an injury.
In a much-awaited match, Musetti started off the better between the duo and took an early lead, winning the set 6-4. The second set was closely contested, but the Italian prevailed again, winning it 7-5.
This defeat marked the end of Fritz's Olympic campaign while Musetti will face German Alexander Zverev in the next round.
#3 Daniil Medvedev loses to Felix Auger-Aliassime
Daniil Medvedev faced Felix Auger-Aliassime for a place in the quarterfinals at the Olympics, with the Canadian winning the match 6-3, 7-6.
Such was Auger-Aliassime's dominance that he did not face any break points throughout. Medvedev could not get going throughout the match, before losing the second set in tie-break.
Felix Auger-Aliassime will next face Norway's Casper Ruud in the last eight.
#2 Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula's medal hopes go up in smoke
After an early exit from the singles draw, both Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula were expected to go deep in the doubles. However, the Americans suffered a shock defeat at the hands of the Czech duo of Karolina Muchova and Linda Noskova in the second round.
Gauff and Pegula started off well and dominated in the first set. The American duo won the first set 2-6 to take an early lead. However, Muchova and Noskova hit back in the second, winning it 6-4. The match was decided in the third set tie-break which the Czech duo won by 10-5.
#1 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova knocks out reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova started off as an underdog in her quarterfinal match against Barbora Krejcikova. However, the Slovakian pulled off an impressive straight-sets victory to book her place in the quarterfinals.
Schmiedlova won the match 6-4, 6-2 to shock her Czech opponent. The Slovakian came into the match full of confidence, having beaten Katie Bouler, Beatriz Haddad Maia and Jasmine Paolini in the previous rounds. She continued her fine form with a win against the ninth seed.
Schmiedlova will face Donna Vekic in the semifinals with hopes of winning her maiden medal at the Games.
