After losing to Gaston Gaudio in the quarterfinals of the Buenos Aires Open on his Golden Swing debut, the then 48th-ranked Nadal lifted his first title on South American soil by beating Jose Acasuso, Alex Calatrava, Agustin Calleri, Ricardo Mello and Alberto Martin in successive matches.
In the process, Nadal lifted his second career singles title, and the first of a career-best 11 titles on the season.
