The Australian Open 2025 is all set to get underway on Sunday, January 12 in Melbourne. Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, and World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka are amongst the ones to steal the limelight in the first major of the year.
But for Indian viewers, there are plenty to look forward to in 2025. In 2023, Sania Mirza made his last Grand Slam appearance at the Australian Open while Rohan Bopanna lifted the doubles title last year.
List of Indians competing at Australian Open 2025
#5 Sumit Nagal
In men’s singles, Sumit Nagal is India’s only hope. Nagal has happy memories of playing at Melbourne Park after he advanced to the second round last time around with a victory over Alexander Bublik. On the back of his impressive performances, Nagal broke into the top 100 and achieved his career-best ranking of 68 in July 2024.
Nagal has lost the plot since then and is currently ranked No.98 in the world. Having also failed to go beyond the Round of 32 at the ASB Classic, Nagal would be keen to make amends.
#4 Rohan Bopanna
For Rohan Bopanna, the last edition of the Australian Open was nothing short of a fairytale. Not only did he become the oldest World No.1, but also went on to claim the men’s doubles title after beating Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the final at Rod Laver Arena.
This time around, Bopanna does not have Matthew Ebden as his partner after the duo split up following the ATP Finals last year. Ranked No.15 in the world, Bopanna has Colombia’s Nicolas Barrientos as his new partner and would be looking to replicate something similar from last year.
#3 Rithvik Bollipalli
Rithvik Bollipalli has a massive task on his hands as he will be making his debut in the Grand Slams. The 23-year-old is set to partner Ryan Seggerman from the United States. Ranked No.72 in the world, Bollipalli has the challenge of carrying forward the legacy of Bopanna.
Bollipalli did not have a memorable time at Brisbane International where he crashed out in the pre-quarters. The duo of Bollipalli and Robin Haase lost 4-6, 2-6 to Jason Kubler and Rinky Hijikata.
#2 N Sriram Balaji
The focus will be on N Sriram Balaji, who has a fair amount of experience playing doubles in Grand Slams. Last year, the 34-year-old made his way through to the second round at Melbourne along with Russia’s Victor Vlad Cornea but lost in straight sets to Marcelo Gonzales and Mate Pavic.
Balaji recently played in the Adelaide International where he partnered with Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela. The duo crashed out in the pre-quarters after losing to Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.
#1 Yuki Bhambri
Yuki Bhambri will also carry hopes in men’s doubles in the Australian Open. He will partner France’s Albano Olivetti in doubles. Bhambri and Olivetti recently made their way through to the semi-finals of the ASB Classic in Auckland.
But Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus beat them in a thrilling three-setter. Bhambri is currently ranked No.48 in doubles.
