The likes of Daniil Medvedev and Frances Tiafoe fell by the way side as upsets continued on Day 5 of the 2025 Australian Open. Both men went down in five-set marathons in their respective second-round encounters.
The duo were not the only big names to bite the dust as a few others also saw their run come to a premature end at the hands of underdogs.
Here, we take a look back five of the most shocking results, on the men's and women's sides combined, to have unfolded on Day 5 of the 2025 Australian Open:
#5 Emma Raducanu def. Amanda Anisimova
Emma Raducanu continued her strong start to not just the Australian Open but her 2025 season. Playing in her first tournament of the season, the former US Open champ has now taken out two higher-ranked opponents on the big stage.
Up against the powerful Amanda Anisimova, Raducanu was always going to need her return game to be at the best. And so it was, as the youngster broke her opponent on eight occasions to notch up a tight 6- 3, 7-5 victory.
Double faults continue to hurt the Brit, but it was a much cleaner showing as she reduced the number from 15 to 5. She will need to improve her service numbers significantly when she takes to court against Iga Swiatek in the third-round
#4 Veronika Kudermetova def. Katie Boulter
Katie Boulter had come into this year's Australian Open in good form, having impressed with her performances at the preparatory United Cup.
The form, however, shone through only in parts during her second-round encounter against Veronika Kudermetova. A slow start meant that the Brit found herself staring at a 1-5 deficit. She overcame that but a guily Kudermetova pulled out the slicing-and-dicing just in time to edge the opener in a tiebreaker.
The momentum continued to swing back-and-forth but it was Kudermetova who played the big points better (she posted a 100% figure when it came to break point conversion) and is rewarded with a third- round showdown against Beatriz Haddad Maia.
#3 Fabian Marozsan def. Frances Tiafoe
Frances Tiafoe's poor run of form continued as he made another early exit a Slam, going down in five sets against Fabian Marozsan in the second round of the Australian Open.
The loss is likely to hurt more as he was in a winning position after the third set. He, however, squanderd the advantage and even the 19 aces could not come to his resuce.
In the end, it was the wasted opportunities that became the American's undoing. He could convert only three of his 20 break point opportunities and was made to pay. For Marozsan though, the road continues as he faces Lorenzo Sonego next.
#2 Miomir Kecmanovic def. Hubert Hurkacz
Hubert Hurkacz's firepower was difused by an inspired Miomir Kecmanovic, who delivered the most lopsided upset of the day at the Australian Open.
Unfazed by the 14 aces from his opponent, Kecmanovic grinded a win from the back court dropping only eight games en-route to a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 victory on the John Cain Arena.
The Serb fended off all the three break points that he faced and never really look in any real danger against his more-fancied opponent. Up next for him is another big name in the form of Holger Rune.
#1 Learner Tien def. Daniil Medvedev
Learner Tien joined his fellow Next Gen star in taking out a top-10 seed at the Australian Open, sinking Daniil Medvedev late into the night 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-7(8), 1-6, 7-6(7).
The youngster was everywhere in court even late in the fourth set, taking on drive volleys, hitting winners down-the-line, around the net and more. His dynamism eventually wore Medvedev, who was bidding to come back from two-set defecit for a second consecutive time, down.
Tien's win over Medvedev is by far the biggest in his career. Having come through the qualification rounds, he really has made the tournament his own. He will face Corentin Moutet in the third round.
